Towers & Columns

In petrochemicals, towers are among the most critical process equipment responsible for separation, purification, and product preparation. The most important towers include:

  • Distillation

 

  • Absorption/Stripping

 

  • Extraction

 

  • Gas Scrubbing (Scrubber)

 

  • Rectification

 

  • Auxiliary towers such as Cooling Towers and Dryers
برج تقطیر

Distillation Column

Application: Separation of petroleum mixture components (e.g. benzene, gasoline, white spirit) based on boiling point differences.
Structure: A vertical column with trays or packing where separation occurs stage by stage.
Types:

  • Fractional Distillation

 

  • Vacuum Distillation for heavy petroleum cuts

Absorption Tower

Application: Absorption of one or more components from a gas stream using a liquid absorbent.
Example: Removal of H₂S and CO₂ from gas using amine solutions (Amine Absorber).
Structure: Usually a tray or packed column for maximum gas-liquid contact.

Stripping / Regeneration Tower

Application: Reverse of absorption; the absorbed component is released and the absorbent is regenerated.
Example: H₂S stripping from amine solution in gas sweetening units.

Scrubber Tower

Application: Purification of gas streams from dust, particulates, or contaminants by wet or dry scrubbing.
Example: Used in combustion units or exhaust outlets of furnaces.
Types:

  • Wet Scrubber

 

  • Dry Scrubber
برج استخراج مایع – مایع

Extraction Tower

Application: Separation of liquid mixture components using a selective solvent.
Example: Extraction of aromatics from petroleum cuts using selective solvents.
Structure: Usually tray-type or packed.

Rectification Column

Application: A high-purity distillation column for precise separation of light components such as propane, butane, and ethylene.
Example: Ethylene Plants.

Cooling Tower – Utility

Application: Rejection of excess heat from cooling water used in heat exchangers and condensers.
Types: Open circuit, closed circuit, hybrid.

برج جذب فیزیکی و شیمیایی

Absorber/Stripping for Purification

Application: Removal of impurities such as sulfur compounds, water, and other contaminants from gas streams.
Example: Desiccant Towers for natural gas dehydration.
